Declared to be The Son of God

Romans 1:4 says "who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,"

The Holy Spirit bore witness to the fact that Jesus is the Son of God by raising Him from the dead.  This gives us great hope in that Jesus led the way out of the grave and we will someday follow Him when He gives us glorified bodies.

The Gospel Concerning Jesus

As we look at the gospel concerning Jesus we see that again God is a God who keeps His promises.  He pays attention to every detail of His promises whether they were to the nation of Israel or to an individual.  In this case God promised David that the eternal king would be of the seed of David.

The fact that God kept His promise to David gives us great comfort in the God who is the promise keeper.

We can trust God because He keeps all His promises.

Paul a bond-servant of Christ Jesus Romans 1:1-7

Paul starts the greeting with his name Paul which is customary for his letters.  He then continues with the phrase “a bond-servant of Christ Jesus”.

The first thing Paul wants them to understand about himself is he is a bond-servant.

Most english translations translate the word here doulos as either servant or bond-servant.

The word actually means bond slave so Paul is calling himself a slave of Christ Jesus.

This is a very interesting way for a man to describe himself.  Can you imagine walking up to to a total stranger and saying “Hi I’m Keith Powers and I’m a bond slave of Christ Jesus.”?

So why is Paul calling himself a slave right from the start?
